From Chamomile to Champagne

"I always turn to the sports pages first, which records people's accomplishments. The front page has nothing but man's failures." - Earl Warren

Not only did Warren blow the investigation into the Kennedy assassination, he also had really lousy foresight when it came to Toronto sports media.

Given the exceedingly low expectations for this year's edition of the Leafs, one would think Sundin's chase for the Leafs all-time goals and points records would be one of the biggest media narratives in this town.

One would think.

Instead of recognizing and preparing to celebrate such a noteworthy milestone, those poor ink-stained wretches (keypad RSI victims?) have filled their columns and air time with nothing but man's failures: preponderances on "the semi-annual JFJ gallows walk", "no hope in Leafs Land" and horrifically insensitive questions about "mini-slumps."

After a loss in game 2, the front page of the Sun (in "Jesus is Coming" sized font no less) told Leafs Nation to wait until next year.

Nice.

Now, I've waxed rhapsodic about Sundin in the past but I'm hoping Friday's papers finally step-up and are chock-a-block with coverage on the Big Swede's accomplishments (I'm hoping, but I'm not holding my breath).

Tip of the hat to MLSE: nice touch to name the guy the first, second and third star of the game. Well played.

what is making me really mad today is the posts at the site called HABS INSIDE/OUT where those idiots are toasting our team, our town, and anything else in blue and white. lets show them something, as didnt we eliminate them last year or what? go leafs go.

Why are you reading a Habs blog and why are you surprised at their reaction? If I had a blog the things I would say about the Habs and their moronic fans would definitely not be family-friendly. I was actually surprised that their comments were in full sentences and not their usual guttural nonsense.

More important is what Leaf fans are saying about this, and I don't think they're saying enough. What more does this guy have to do to gain some respect? Sittler is widely considered (and rightly so) to be one of the greatest Leafs ever. Gilmour is still worshiped for that magnificent '93 playoff run, and Clark still has a magical place in all our hearts. None of these great Leaf captains ever won a Cup with Toronto. Two of them never won a Cup at all!

Yet, for many Leaf fans, Sundin is not mentioned in their company. I don't understand it and think it is disgraceful. He has been the cornerstone of this franchise for over a decade. He's led the team in scoring every year except for one, injury-shortened year. He's now the all-time leader in goals and points, and second only to Salming for assists.

Sadly, I think Sundin's brilliance, reliability, and ability will only be appreciated by those of us that can "forgive" him for not being Canadian. Appreciate him while he's here, Leaf fans, because we will sorely miss him when he leaves.
