Maple Leaf Gardens

About 10 days ago, I was very fortunate and got to accompany Globe and Mail photographer Fred Lum inside Maple Leaf Gardens.

Fred's photos are now up at the Globe and Mail and they're worth a look.

The stairs going up to Harold Ballard's former bunker in the North end of MLG. The new steel beam work can be seen in the upper left corner of the shot.

  1. Too bad they're not keeping Ballard's bunker. I've always thought it should be on display for future generations, behind several inches of lead-lined glass, so the evil can't escape.

Sad to see the old rink looking like that. I hope they keep some of the old fixtures visible in the new construction.

  3. turn the gardens into a hotel, with all rooms having a window facing the ice. also skates could be rented for a small fee. wouldn't it be nice to get up in the middle of the night and go skating with the ghosts of the leafs of the past.

  4. Scooter - I was back through today (May 20) and Ballard's bunker is still there. I think it's one of the last items slated for demo. Part of me wishes it would be maintained, but I'm also hoping knocking it down exorcises a few Leaf demons...

  5. Paul All of the steel beam and truss work will be maintained, as will some of the colour scheme. I think there's also plans for a heritage centre on site.
